OUR MISSION

Grace United Methodist Church, empowered by the example and teachings of Jesus Christ, welcomes all to:

  • GATHER as a church family to worship God,
  • GROW in faith from believer to disciple, and
  • SERVE others, working for justice and mercy in the world.
HISTORY

Grace United Methodist Church was founded in 1887 on a tradition of Christian fellowship that is older than the Village of Lake Bluff.  The original congregation met in homes until the first building was erected and dedicated in 1891.  In 1899, the current church site at the corner of Scranton and Center Avenues was chosen as the location for the new Methodist Church. The structure served until 1948 when major renovations and additions resulted in the present sanctuary, Northrop Chapel, Fellowship Hall and Fireplace Room. In 1959, an Education Building was also added.  The church and community have remained entwined from the time the Camp Meeting was established as a “non-sectarian summer resort where people could enjoy cultural and religious programs, social affairs and recreation."

  • What should I wear?  People dress in a variety of ways. Some men wear khakis and polo or button down shirts and some wear a suit and tie. The majority of women come in slacks and blouses/shirts while a few come in dresses. Our young adult and youth crowd are often in jeans and t-shirts/hoodies.
  • What about Holy Communion?  The first Sunday of the month we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion which is open to all who desire to receive it.
  • Do you offer Nursery during service? Yes, our nursery is open during worship services and is staffed by a trained caregiver.
